Margaret Wertheim TED Talk
People might be familiar with Margaret Wertheim’s Crochet Coral Reef project already but I was really fascinated by some of the ideas in this talk at TED.com. I’m not sure how relevant it is but I thought it might be of interest since we’ve been talking about bio-architectures and ecology as well as textiles and ways of knitting and weaving structures.
There’s also an interview with her that’s well worth reading: Crocheting in hyperbolic space.
One thing I’d like to do besides learning to crochet hyperbolic forms is to collect my own plastic rubbish. Margaret and her sister Chrissy started doing this after hearing about the Pacific Ocean garbage vortex. — “When we started doing this we thought we were pretty ecologically sound, but by the end of the first week we were appalled, and by the end of the first month we couldn’t believe it … It is really, really hard”

Nice connection. Will look at that talk soon.
I think it would be an interesting class exercise to get everyone collecting all plastic rubbish. Maybe we can make a huge plastic model for the exhibition in July.
